The Aleatico is a native vine of the Elba Island, off the Tuscan coast, producing a natural, not fortified Passito, with an intense flavour, particularly appreciated by Napoleon, who during his exile on the island contributed to the development of its cultivation.

It was awarded its own DOCG – controlled and guaranteed denomination of origin – classification in 2011.

The vines are planted on terraces, still using traditional methods. After the crisis of the 70s, this grape was revaluated and production was restarted with the most advanced techniques and using internationally renowned winemakers. The Consortium of Elba Wines, which was signed by 30 manufacturers, was established to promote and support the Elba Aleatico Passito Wine.

According to the DOCG regulations, the Elba Aleatico Passito Wine is to be produced with 100% of Aleatico, from vineyards with a maximum density of 5,000 plants per hectare and a production of no more than 70 quintals per hectare. Aleatico grapes, which are left on the vines as long as possible, are dried for an average of two weeks on wooden racks, before being crushed and pressed.

The end result is a wine that is fairly high in alcohol (16%) but maintains good levels of acidity. These characteristics make it a particularly age-worthy wine. Its color is a deep ruby-red, its aromas are fruity and floral, with a dense and persistent taste.

The Elba Aleatico Passito Wine classic combination is with the “schiaccia briaca”, a typical cake from the Elba Island, based on dried fruit, pine nuts, raisins and Elba Aleatico Passito Wine, but it is goes well with all kind of pastries and cheeses, especially gorgonzola or pecorino cheese.
