logo_olio-garda-dopAt the taste Extra Virgin Garda DOP olive oil can be recognized for harmony or its organoleptic notes and for the light and balanced aromas: the scents of fresh grass, aromatic herbs, hay and artichoke, together with the typical almond aftertaste, make it unique.
The olives intended for production of extra virgin olive oil with “Garda” Protected Origin Denomination come from the olivated territories of the provinces of Brescia, Verona, Mantua and Trento. The most widespread cultivations are Casaliva, Frantoio and Leccino.

The origins of Garda oil: from the Middle Ages until today

Olive trees have always been present in the lake Garda area and started to have a key role in the 7th century A.D. as witnessed by a edict of year 643 which applied financial sanctions to whoever was caught damaging olive plants in the villages surrounding Lake Garda.
Already since  the Middle Ages Garda oil was renowned for its high quality and the high economical value in comparison wit oils from other regions and it was used with excellent results both for dietary and medical purposes.
The nutritional use was intended only for few people, because in the Dark “4-6 Kg of Garda oil olio were worth as much as a very large pig”.
During the Renaissance human activity instead contributed towards defining the distinctive traits of the agricultural landscape and generally of Lake Garda.
In this age slopes started to be redesigned with elaborate arrangements, which became proper “terraced” constructions facing towards the lake, suitable for olive tree grove cultivation and so typical that they make the area famous, so much that it was called, already in 1968, “Olive tree Riviera”.
The fame of Garda oil has since then increasingly grown. Today the Garda DOP olive oil is among the top 5 Italian DOP olive growing enterprises.
When consuming it Garda DOP olive oil presents the following features: color from green to yellow more or less intense, scent fruity medium or light, flavor fruity, sweet hints with a typical almond aftertaste.

Consortium Garda DOP Olive oil

The Producers Association was born with the participation of producers and operators of the industry of three regions,  – Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto – and four provinces: Brescia, Mantua, Trento and Verona, with the aim of implementing an adequate control program intended to guaranteeing the origin of Extra Virgin Olive oil Garda DOP.
The Consortium achieved acknowledgment by the Department of Agriculture and Forest politics with the Ministerial Decree n. 61983 of 18 March 2004, a confirmation of gratitude for those who have been committed to this project of pursuing the quality of oil which is so linked to tradition and culture.
Quality Culture means to extend a project beyond pressing and bottling, it means to know and preserve the environment, to pass on a production system that can guarantee the final consumer, through strict and certified controls, to buy the true Garda DOP olive oil.
As well as the tasks which were assigned to it by the ministerial acknowledgment, the Consortium provides assistance to its olive growers miller and bottler members consorzio supplying training and technical assistance, by recuperating and encouraging olive growing with the certainty that this centuries-old type of cultivation is necessary in order to maintain the biodiversity of the Garda territory.
