In Udine, when you want to make a precious bottle of wine as a gift or simply want to taste quality wines, the choice inevitably falls on the Enoteca Peccol, a place of quality and professionalism, courtesy and competence since 1921. Today, under the passionate management of Giuseppe Peccol – winemaker, sommelier and representative of the third generation of his family running the wine bar – a selection of over a thousand of the best Italian and foreign labels is offered.
We were able to talk with Giuseppe, who told us the fascinating story of his family and how the Peccol Vini has evolved over the years.
“Our company has been part of the economic and social fabric of Udine for almost a century. The activity started in the first post-war period by my grandfather Giuseppe, who moved at 23 from the alpine village of Pietratagliata with the desire to dedicate himself to the trade of wines and vinegars in the Friulian capital. In 1921 he founded, in Via Bassi in Udine, the ‘Peccol Vini Distribuzione’, transferred in the thirties in Viale Ledra and from 1946 in the current headquarters in via Caterina Percoto. My father Diego took over the inheritance and, together with my mother, Alessandra Grassi, continues with dedication and success the activity of the winery until 1990, when I took over after having done for a few years the winemaker in a well-known cellar Friulian. In these years, I have tried to make Peccol Vini a full-fledged wine shop, enriching the offer with precious and sought-after products”.
Tradition and evolution
The activity of Peccol Vini, in almost a century of history, has continuously developed, promoting a culture of wine that has always been able to respond in an excellent way to the expectations of its customers. An evolution that has been accompanied by the conservation of the historic rooms of the winery, a place of charm that characterizes and embellishes the city’s landscape. For this reason, and for the ability to maintain a solid link with the territory over time, in 2009 the Peccol Vini received the recognition of ” Friuli Venezia Giulia historic club”, an important honour, which rewards the smart work done from the Peccol family over many decades.
The selection of wine labels in your Enoteca: on what criteria is it based?
“The search for oenological pearls is continuous and careful, and privileges the producers who, in addition to guaranteeing great quality, are representative of their territory. A special attention is given to the wines of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which is about half of the cellar, while the rest holds national elite bottles and foreign specialties from different latitudes. There are many wine bottles from small artisan winemakers and now my winery is a point of reference also for the FIVI producers (Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers). Among the autochthonous wines Malvasias are well represented in their varied interpretations, from the elegant ones with traditional vinification in steel (for example, Doro Princic del Collio and Renata Pizzulin dell’Isonzo) to those generous, macerated, very integral and unfiltered (for example, Skerk and Zidarich of the Carso). Also the Ribolla gialla is present in many versions: from the still one (Ronco delle Betulle) to the sparkling version (among all the most famous of the Collavini company), up to the most extreme one, like the one vinified in Anfora di Gravner.
The most representative wine of the territory remains the Friulano (ex Tocai) with interpretations at the highest levels among which the company Miani di Buttrio stands out. As far as native red wines are concerned, Schioppettino (from black ribolla grapes) is meeting great success for its elegant spicy notes. The one produced at Prepotto (Ronco severo by Stefano Novello – Az. Petrussa – Antico Broilo) certainly is one of the best ones”.
Peccol also offers excellent bulk wines – Friulano, Merlot and Cabernet – carefully selected in the Collio area. The offer is completed by many references among spirits, liqueurs, grappa, extra virgin olive oils and vinegars. While the most demanding gourmets can choose between artisan pastas, rice and precious dark chocolate.
